Distribution of independent video to non-theatrical market such as museums, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations and television.

The mandate of the CIFVF is to support not only Canadian independent producers but private sector distributors. Therefore, the CIFVF cannot accept distribution arrangements with public sector agencies, either federal or provincial, or with distribution arms of CRTC licensed broadcasters.

It should be noted that in the event a project in production is awarded financing, a contract with a private sector distributor who specializes in distributing to the non-theatrical sector will be required. This contract should provide, at a minimum, that the distributor retains the non-theatrical rights for Canada for at least three years on an exclusive basis. No payments will be issued by the CIFVF unless such a contract has been provided.

In the application process, the CIFVF will accept letters of interest from only the non-theatrical distributors whose names appear on our list. Applications which contain letters of interest from distributors not on the CIFVF list will be returned.

For producers who are interested in self distributing, it should be noted that the CIFVF imposes the following conditions:

  • the producer’s company should have had several years experience in distributing not only their own product but other people’s product;
  • someone in the production company should be dedicated to the task of distribution;
  • a business and marketing plan for the distribution of the product in question should be supplied.

We will gladly add other distribution companies which specialize in distributing to the non-theatrical sector to the list if they submit the following evidence to the CIFVF that:

  • the company is Canadian owned and controlled;
  • the distributor distributes the projects of third parties;
  • the company has been in business at least for two years;
  • the distributor is active in the non-theatrical market. Demonstration of this might include such factors as whether or not the distributor attends the eastern and/or western Showcases or other educational trade shows, if the distributor maintains a mailing list for the non-theatrical sector and does mailings to end-users in the non-theatrical market.

    Please note that a request to be on the CIFVF list of non-theatrical distributors must come from the distribution company itself. There is no application form per se; a letter containing the relevant information is sufficient. The letter may be sent by mail to the CIFVF, Suite 203, 666 Kirkwood Avenue, Ottawa, K1Z 5X9 or it may be sent by email to: It will take two to three weeks for a decision to be issued to the distribution company.

    Please note that we will not accept requests for consideration from distributors during the deadline period which is mid- February to mid- May.
